The 42-year-old Democrat became the city's chief executive at 12:01 a.m., promoted from president of the City Council to replace the disgraced Kilpatrick."

Mr. Ken Cockrel Jr., the current President of the Detroit City Council, might become the next mayor of Detroit, Michigan if he succeeds current mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. Mr. Kilpatrick is currently attending a hearing with the Michigan governor that could force him to resign office. If Mr. Kilpatrick resigns, Mr. Cockrel, whose father was a prominent political figure in Detroit, is in line to become mayor until the next election.
