Rev. Joseph Lowery was recently awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Excerpt: "Less than 60 years ago, Atlanta Rev. Joseph Lowery and black men like him could not sit at the same lunch counter or share a bus seat with white people. Yet there Lowery was Wednesday in the gilded East Room of the White House, the racism and anger and struggle that had filled so many of his 87 years at least temporarily set aside as he was called to accept the nation’s highest civilian honor."

Rev. Joseph Lowery will receive the Presidential Medal of Honor the nation’s top honor for a civilian. Excerpt: "Lowery, a long-time United Methodist minister, helped lead the Montgomery bus boycott after Rosa Parks was denied a seat. In 1957, he co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference with the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Lowery, who gave the benediction at Obama’s inauguration, has been an ally of the President since meeting him in March 2007. The two men first met in Selma at the 42nd anniversary of the Bloody Sunday march."
